Taking a kitchen painting by Diego Velázquez as a starting point, this week’s lecture explored how the tactile sense could be understood as a multimodal experience deeply connected to the social and the sensus communis (common sense). Building on this, the presentation examined the skin as a profoundly political organ. It was discussed as a semipermeable membrane that mediated between the body and the outside world, allowing for joy and care while simultaneously making us vulnerable in both positive and dangerous ways.
